German Wines with Charles Hawkins

In April we welcome Charles Hawkins of Awin Barratt Siegel Wine Agencies who will be presenting a range of wines from their German portfolio.

Awin Barratt Siegel Wine Agencies, six time winner of the coveted IWSC Wine Importer of the Year trophy, has been importing and sourcing distinct regional wines exclusively from key wine producing areas across the globe for the independent trade for over 30 years. ABS works with family run wineries to establish long term partnerships for distribution in the UK.

This tasting will offer a chance to taste some high quality wines from Germany. It will be a timely opportunity to make comparisons and contrasts with the very different wines from Austria that we tasted last month. ABS Wines import an impressive selection of wines from 10 famous German winemakers with whom they have very close connections.

Charles Hawkins is a specialist in German wines and is passionate about them. It will be a pleasure to welcome him to Grand Union – his previous date with us was cancelled because of Covid. Charles will show 8 wines covering a range of grapes, styles, producers and areas. We will start with Chardonnay, an unusual grape for Germany, but a wine that has already been awarded 94 points from The Wine Advocate (Robert Parker) website – a rare accolade. We will taste Rieslings in various styles, of course, but red wines will also be well represented: Pinot Noir, Spätburgunder (late-ripening Pinot Noir), and a rather special Lemberger (also known as Blaufränkisch). At least four of these wines have already been rated 90+. This promises to be another very interesting and enjoyable tasting. See you there!
